Both lemon water and chia seeds are highly beneficial for health. Lemon water not only hydrates the body but also improves digestion. It contains rich amounts of Vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system. At the same time, chia seeds are considered a superfood, because they are rich in fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. However, consuming these two together may cause some problems.
Lemon Water and Chia Seeds Combination: Precautions
- Water absorbing capacity of chia seeds: Chia seeds have a special property, which enables them to absorb water and form a gel-like consistency. When you add them to lemon water, these seeds absorb water rapidly, which can change the taste of the drink. If these are not taken correctly, they may increase the risk of choking and cause stomach discomfort or bloating.
- Digestive Problems: The sour nature of lemon water can cause stomach irritation or acidity for some people. If chia seeds are added to it, their gel-like structure can slow down the digestive system, leading to problems like heaviness and constipation. Especially, if you add too many chia seeds, this problem can worsen.
- Effect on blood sugar: Chia seeds are rich in fiber, which is helpful in controlling blood sugar. But drinking lemon mixed with water can cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
- Antioxidant deficiency: The antioxidants present in lemon help in removing harmful free radicals from the body. But combining them with chia seeds may decrease the absorption of these antioxidants, reducing their effects.
