Manchester, January 17 With his late hat-trick that guaranteed an unexpected comeback victory, Amad proved to be a hero as Manchester United gained a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Southampton in the Premier League.
With the victory, United moved up to 12th place in the standings, while Southampton, who have yet to win in the 2024–25 season, are still 10 points from safety at the bottom of the league.
A couple of minutes before halftime, Manuel Ugarte diverted a Saints corner into his own goal, causing United to lose a mostly end-to-end match.
Southampton was a tough opponent to defeat, particularly with a one-goal lead, but Amad saved the day when we needed him most. In the 82nd minute, our number 16 finally got past Aaron Ramsdale’s goal.
With stoppage time drawing near, the Ivorian, not satisfied with a point, went back for more, putting a Christian Eriksen ball in front of the Stretford End before scoring a third with seconds remaining to give the Reds the victory.
“Although we didn’t play well, victory is what matters most right now. They performed well in Southampton. We feel like we have a lot of work ahead of us, and the crew is exhausted. “It was a lack of control in the game today, not a lack of enthusiasm,” United manager Ruben Amorim said.
Man Utd has now won all 16 of their Premier League encounters with Southampton (W 8 D 8), which is their second-longest run against a rival in the tournament (they have also won 16 against Charlton).
In contrast, Southampton has lost all 18 of its away Premier League games (D4 L14), which is the longest streak of losing away from home in the league since Aston Villa in September 2019 (21 games).
