Shubhangi Atre: Dancing brings me unparalleled joy and allows me to truly express myself
It’s been nearly 16 years since Shubhangi Atre , popularly known as Angoori Bhabhi from Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! , last participated in a dance reality show and she’s eager to return to the spotlight. She shares, “I participated in Jalwa 4 2 ka 1, and it was an incredible experience. Over the years, I was approached for a few prominent dance shows, but things didn’t work out. I believe everything happens for a reason, and the best opportunities come at the right time. Now, I’m ready and waiting to hit the dance floor once again.”
Her love for dancing is no surprise — she’s a trained Kathak dancer. She says, “I trained in Kathak for 10 years before getting married. But work commitments and life kept me from practising consistently. For years, I haven’t had the chance to devote time to dance, though it’s always been at the back of my mind to reconnect with it.”
For now, Shubhangi channels her passion for dance through her television role. “Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! has often given me opportunities to showcase my dance skills through various storylines. I’ve even had the honour of choreographing some of my routines for the show,” she shares, adding, “My dance training has significantly enhanced my acting , helping me express emotions more fluidly. It works the other way around, too, as acting has refined my dancing. Both arts serve as therapy for me. While acting has given me recognition and everything I could wish for, dancing brings me unparalleled joy and allows me to truly express myself.”
The actress also draws inspiration from iconic dancers, with one name standing out. “Madhuri Dixit ji has been a monumental influence in my journey as a dancer. I’m sure countless girls, like me, fell in love with dance watching her perform. I’ve been a die-hard fan, watching her films on repeat. Her energy and expressions are unmatched. Back in school, I danced to many of her songs, and my friends lovingly nicknamed me ‘Hamari Madhuri’.”
