Seven people died in the thrilling and risky Jallikattu and Manjuvirattu events held on the day of Kanum Pongal in Tamil Nadu. Two bulls also died in separate incidents. One bull died during the event in Pudukkottai. Police said that the bull and the bull's owner died in Siravayal Manjuvirattu in Sivaganga. At least 130 people were injured in these events.
The bull and its owner died
Tanish Raja of Naduvikottai Keela Avandipatti village had brought his bull to the Manjuvirattu event at Siravayal in Sivaganga. The bull and Tanish Raja died after falling into a farm well at Kambanur while running away from the arena. Tanish Raja jumped into the well to save his bull but both of them died due to drowning in the water. A spectator Subbaiah from Devakottai was gored by the bull. He died while being taken to the hospital.
Several people were killed in the bull attack
Police said that 55-year-old spectator P Periyasamy of Mettupatti village near Vadipatti was gored in the neck by a bull at Alanganallur in Madurai. He was taken to Rajaji Government Hospital in Madurai where doctors declared him dead. The bull attacked several people, injuring at least 70 people. Bulls attacked spectators during jallikattu events in Tiruchirapalli, Karur and Pudukottai districts. It gored two spectators and injured 148 people, including the owner of the bull.
C. Perumal of Odugumpatti near Keeranur was gored to death after being gored by a bull during a Jallikattu event in Pudukottai, police said. At least 19 people were killed in the event. A 30-year-old man was killed during the Eruthu Vidum Vizha event, a form of bull race. A 45-year-old man was killed in a bull attack in Salem district.
