Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease that affects the joints. It is also called degenerative arthritis because it is related to old age. In this condition, the cartilage (soft covering of the bone) located in the joints starts getting damaged over time.

Recently a new study has shown that often hearing some kind of 'crepitus' (crackling, rattling or cracking sound) in the knees can be a sign of osteoarthritis. The study also found that the majority of people who developed osteoarthritis later on heard sounds in their knees, but did not experience pain in the early stages.

Osteoarthritis symptoms

Common symptoms of osteoarthritis include mild to severe pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints. In the early stages, pain usually occurs after physical activity and is relieved after rest. But as the disease progresses, pain may be felt even at rest. Additionally, there is weakness in the joints and sometimes creaking or grinding sounds are heard.

Why do you hear joint noises?

Crepitus or 'crunching' sounds are then produced in the knee. When the cartilage of the knee gradually starts breaking down and the bones start rubbing against each other. This sound is usually painless, but it may be a sign of developing osteoarthritis in the future.

Who is at risk?

age

As we age, the process of cartilage breakdown in joints accelerates, leading to OA. The risk increases.

male genital organs

Women suffer from this disease more than men.

obesity

Being overweight puts extra pressure on the joints, especially the knees and hips, which leads to OA. The risk increases.

hurt

OA can be caused by joint injury due to sports or accidents. The risk may increase.

heredity

Some people have OA. Develops naturally.

deformity of bones

Some people are born with malformed joints or defective cartilage, which can lead to OA. The risk may increase.
