Mumbai Police arrested a man on Sunday who is accused of stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his residence.
The suspect was apprehended in Thane, three days after the attack, according to news agency ANI citing Mumbai Police.
Initially, the accused identified himself as Bijoy Das, but later revealed his true name to be Mohammed Sajjad. Authorities are currently verifying his identity.
A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) involved in the search operation confirmed that the suspect was found resting beneath dry grass and leaves in a dense area of the bushes. “The accused had previously worked in the area, which is why he knew the location and felt it was safe to hide there,” a senior officer explained. Following his arrest, Sajjad was transported to Mumbai for further questioning.
Less than 24 hours after the stabbing, a CCTV image surfaced showing the assailant fleeing from the scene. The footage showed the attacker on the staircase of the sixth floor, following the assault on Saif Ali Khan at his 12th-floor apartment in Bandra.
On Saturday, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) apprehended a suspect, Aakash Kailash Kannojia (31), at Chhattisgarh's Durg railway station in connection with the stabbing. Kannojia was traveling on the Jnaneshwari Express from Mumbai LTT to Kolkata Shalimar. Earlier CCTV footage captured him descending the stairs of Khan's building and purchasing earphones at an electronics store.
Saif Ali Khan, 54, underwent surgery at Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital on Thursday to remove part of a broken knife lodged near his spinal cord after being repeatedly stabbed in an attempted robbery. Doctors have confirmed that Khan is out of danger and is expected to be discharged soon.
