Being described as the 'worst Premier League signing of all time' isn't how Antony would've expected his Manchester United career to end.

That's the prospect the Brazilian winger faces as he nears what could be described as an overdue United exit.

The tricky winger arrived at Old Trafford in the same summer as Erik ten Hag, with the pair having worked together at Ajax.

United didn't get much for their £82million investment though, given Antony only managed eight goals and three assists across his debut campaign.

Things got even worse the season after when he registered five G/A contributions from 38 appearances throughout the entire 2023/24 season.

But with Ten Hag long gone and new boss Ruben Amorim clearly not a fan, it looks like it's the end of the road as far as Antony in a United shirt is concerned.

According to , Real Betis are closing in on a move for the 24-year-old, who is expected to pen a short-term loan switch to the La Liga-based outfit.

It's reported there isn't an option to buy clause inserted into the loan agreement, but the chance of a United remontada from this point on looks slim as it is.

It would prove a major disappointment for all involved but for Gary Neville, comments about the attacker made just over a year ago have left him with egg on his face.

Speaking in December 2023, Neville was commenting on the attributes Antony has that could help him turn around his United career, when he described him having the capability to become a "Riyad Mahrez-type player".

The ex-Red Devils ace said: "[Mahrez] only did a couple of simple things in the game but he was always very effective. His team-mates could read his moves. Look, [Antony] has got courage and he always gets on the ball, but what you need obviously is end product and he's going to be judged upon that...

"That will come maybe as he gets a little bit older. But to start with, what he has to do is just start to create parts of his game that are consistent. He's so inconsistent and that can be any young winger."

Should his transfer go through this month, Antony will likely leave United with more yellow cards in the Premier League than he's managed goal contributions.
