Shakib Al Hasan, a former Awami League MP and all-rounder for Bangladesh, was the subject of an arrest order issued by a Dhaka court on Sunday due to two returned bank checks. Since ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave Bangladesh last year owing to civil upheaval, Shakib has not returned out of fear for his safety. “Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the arrest warrant asking police to submit a report on the execution of the order on March 24,” according to a reporter.
According to him, the warrant was issued because Hasan, who is also the head of an agricultural farm, did not show up for the court hearing on a matter involving bounced checks as previously instructed.
Since Gazi Shahagir Hossain, the farm’s managing director, too, failed to answer the summons, a second similar warrant was issued against him. Late last year, Shakib, the greatest cricket player in Bangladesh’s history, played his last Test match against India in Kanpur. He is expected to make his last appearance in Bangladeshi colors in the Champions Trophy in Dubai. Because of his suspicious behavior, he is now prohibited from bowling in all forms of cricket. In the January 7, 2024, elections, the cricket player—who now resides in the United States—was chosen as an MP on the Awami League ticket.
International Finance Investment and Commerce (IFIC) Bank initiated a lawsuit against the cricket player. The cricketer-turned-businessman and three other firm leaders were the targets of a lawsuit filed on December 24 after the IFIC Bank submitted a legal notice over the failed checks earlier in October of last year. Following a hearing, the judge granted bail to two of the farm officials who dutifully turned themselves in to the court today. In 2016, Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm, a crab farm in southern Satkhira, was founded by Shakib, the former captain of the Bangladeshi cricket team. According to reports, the business has not operated since 2021.
