If you have multiple unpaid traffic fines, you need to be cautious, as your driving license could be at risk of cancellation. The Chandigarh administration has recently announced that if a person has five or more pending fines, their driving license will be revoked, along with the cancellation of the registration certificates for their vehicles.
Pradyuman Singh, the in-charge of the Registration and Licensing Authority in Chandigarh's Transport Department, confirmed that over 7.5 lakh unpaid fines have been reported, prompting this decision.
He emphasized, "Traffic violations are a major cause of road accidents, and in the past few years, Chandigarh has seen a significant rise in non-payment of fines, which is alarming and requires immediate action."
Traffic Violations Leading to License CancellationThe Transport Department has announced that, despite multiple reminders and notices, many drivers have ignored fines for offenses such as speeding, running red lights, and reckless driving. As a result, the administration has decided to issue notices to violators, demanding payment of the fines within 15 days. If the fines remain unpaid, the violator’s driving license will be canceled, and their vehicle's registration certificate will be suspended.
Suspension of Vehicle Registration and RestrictionsFurthermore, the vehicles of those who fail to pay the fines will be marked as ‘non-transactional,’ meaning no transactions can occur on the vehicle, such as ownership transfers, renewal of the registration certificate (RC), or issuance of duplicate RC until the outstanding fines are cleared.
Similar Rules in Uttar PradeshIn Uttar Pradesh, repeated traffic violations can also lead to the cancellation of the driver’s license. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered the identification of individuals who frequently violate traffic rules. Drivers who repeatedly break the law could face the cancellation of their licenses, and for commercial vehicles, their permits may also be revoked. Strict action is expected to be taken against violators, including those driving bikes, cars, and e-rickshaws.
