New Delhi: Indian Railways is doing everything to prepare for the massive footfall during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13. Indian Railways has kept aside Rs 5,000 crore to manage the enormous influx of pilgrims and upgrade railway infrastructure. Safety measures are heightened. AI-based CCTV cameras, sniffer dogs, and bomb disposal teams are positioned in key areas. Indian Railways is now gearing up for Mauni Amavasya. Many devotees will travel to the Maha Kumbh Mela on Mauni Amavasya on January 29.

Massive Train Deployment for Mauni Amavasya Pilgrims

The Indian Railways is preparing for a record number of devotees going to Prayagraj for Mauni Amavasya on January 29. Devotees will be taking the holy dip, Amrit Snan. Several media reports say that 400 special trains will be deployed to help manage the influx of people. More than 400 trains from all railways are planned for Mauni Amavasya.

Three railway zones—Northern Railway (NR), North Eastern Railway (NER), and North Central Railway (NCR)—are collaborating to manage the large passenger flow during this event.

Eighty-six trains will be cancelled, diverted, or stopped early to prioritise Mela specials on busy days—over 200 trains by the North Central Railway (NCR).

The Northern Railway, led by the Lucknow Division, is organising operations. More than 48 special trains will run during peak times, with more added based on demand.

Ring rail services will also be provided on routes like Rambagh-Jhusi-Banaras-Bhadohi and Sultanpur-Maa Belha Devi Dham-Pratapgarh for easier travel.

The North Central Railway (Prayagraj Division) also addresses the rise in passenger numbers. Over 100 special trains will run the day after Mauni Amavasya, and an additional 100 trains will be added based on demand.

Enhanced Security and Infrastructure Upgrades for Maha Kumbh Mela

Infrastructure in Prayagraj is improving, with the number of platforms at key stations increasing from 40 to 48. The passenger shelters can now hold up to 130,000 people. Waiting rooms, sleeping pods, executive lounges, and other amenities have also been upgraded to ensure passengers have a comfortable experience.

Smooth Travel Experience: Improved Amenities at Prayagraj Stations

Stations like Prayag Junction, Phaphamau and Prayagraj Sangam have improved facilities. Passengers can find help in multiple languages, medical services, mobile charging points, air-conditioned waiting rooms, dedicated areas for lost items, ticketing, and coach guidance.

Safety measures are in place to prevent emergencies like stampedes. They have conducted mock drills with NDRF, RPF, GRP, and local authorities to prepare for scenarios such as stampedes, medical emergencies, and fires.
