North 24 Parganas: The parents of the trainee doctor who was raped and killed at RG Kar Hospital have been calling for the death penalty, and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has backed their decision to appeal Sanjay Roy’s life sentence in the High Court.
Sanjay Roy, the main defendant in the RG Kar rape and murder case, was given a life sentence by the Sealdah Court. The state government has also been ordered by the court to provide the victim’s family Rs 17 lakh in compensation.
The case concerns the rape and murder of a trainee physician, whose corpse was discovered in the lecture room of the RG Kar Hospital on August 9, 2024.
After meeting with the family of the victim of the RG Kar rape and murder case, Adhikari told ANI, “I have been standing with the family from the first day. I spoke with the parents. We back the family’s choice to turn down the settlement and take their case to the higher courts.
The father of the victim in RG Kar’s rape and murder case refused the Rs 17 lakh settlement on Monday, stating that he will take the case to a higher court to have the accused given the death sentence.
“What the Court believes is a good judgment based on the evidence produced by the CBI, the Court has given that verdict,” the victim’s father told the media report We have several inquiries on the CBI’s probe. We didn’t seek restitution in court. Justice, not restitution, is what we want. The CBI will need to take action since the Kolkata police made a mistake. My daughter’s death has caused us more suffering than the Kolkata police.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has also voiced her displeasure with the court’s decision, claiming that the death sentence would have been certain if the case had included Kolkata Police.
“The media informed me about the punishment. We still support the death penalty, which we have always called for.
However, I am unable to comment much on this since it is a court ruling. Through extensive investigations that were completed in 54–60 days, Kolkata police guaranteed the death penalty in three further instances. This case was serious. Speaking to the media in Malda, CM Mamata said, “We would have guaranteed the death penalty long ago if it had been within our jurisdiction.”
The West Bengal government, meanwhile, has appealed the Sealdah court’s decision to sentence Sanjay Roy to life in jail to the Calcutta High Court.
Advocate General Kishore Dutta has petitioned Justice Debangshu Basak’s division bench to execute Sanjay Roy. The filing of the case has been approved.
