Officials have emphasized that the current Maha Kumbh, the biggest religious event in the world, would set new standards for cleanliness and environmental sustainability. The pledge to eliminate single-use plastics entirely from the event is a significant turning point in this endeavor.

In order to guarantee a smooth implementation, 20,000 “Safai Mitras” have been assigned to keep the area clean. Additionally, 5,000 “Kumbh Seva Mitras” are in charge of running the ghats and helping guests, while 2,500 “Gangadoots” keep an eye on toilet sanitation. Sanitation workers were housed in a well-furnished residential complex, and a unique ‘Vidya Kumbh’ program was being planned to help with their kids’ schooling.

To protect the lives and health of boatmen and sanitation workers, the Swachhata Mitra Suraksha Bima Yojana was implemented. The Swachh Kumbh Fund pays the cost for a Rs 2 lakh life insurance policy that covers all sanitation workers and boatmen participating in the Maha Kumbh. This project guarantees the eradication of single-use plastics in addition to creating a clean atmosphere for devotees. Measures include setting up joint cleaning initiatives with 400 school principals and 4 lakh pupils, as well as offering shop premises to merchants selling environmentally friendly dona-pattals (leaf plates). Campaigns to raise awareness about plastic-free behaviors as part of the “Har Ghar Dastak Abhiyan” have reached a population that is more than five times that of Prayagraj. Strict guidelines for institutions and suppliers, the distribution of facility slip messaging encouraging plastic-free endeavors, and the deployment of 1,500 Ganga Sevadoots all serve to further the environmentally conscious commitment.

Along with the construction of 1.5 lakh toilets, 5,000 urinals, 350 communal toilets, 10 toilet complexes, 40 compactors, and 120 hopper tippers, extensive sanitation facilities have also been constructed.

By combining tradition and sustainability, the Maha Kumbh hopes to serve as a model for future major events throughout the globe.
