Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, announced plans to restore remnants of World War II in Nampong, Changlang district, to boost tourism. Speaking at the inauguration of the three-day Pangsau Pass International Festival (PPIF) on Monday, Khandu revealed the state government’s commitment to curating and redeveloping Nampong town as a historical landmark.

"We will soon engage an expert for this and give a new facelift to Nampong town as a reminder of the bygone WWII," Khandu stated, emphasizing the town's historical, cultural, and economic significance.

Nampong has long been a hub for migration, trade, and cross-cultural interaction. It is situated close to the Pangsau Pass on the Indo-Myanmar border. The area's strategic significance in linking Southeast Asia and Northeast India is symbolised by the famous Stilwell Road, which was constructed during World War II.

Highlighting the festival’s role in celebrating heritage, Khandu praised PPIF as a model for integrating culture and economic development. "Through folk songs, traditional sports, and expeditions to historic sites, we celebrate our heritage while building a foundation for a prosperous future," he said. He noted that the festival provides a platform for local artisans, traders, and entrepreneurs to showcase their skills and products, fostering economic self-reliance.

Khandu also reaffirmed the government's commitment to enhancing connectivity and infrastructure in the Tirap, Changlang, and Longding (TCL) area. These districts have been added to the state's tourist circuit due to their acknowledged tourism potential, and a number of development initiatives are currently in progress to improve accessibility.

"The double-lane national highway connecting Jairampur, Nampong, and Pangsau Pass is a step in this direction," Khandu said. He added that under the central government’s guidance, unprecedented advancements in railway, road, and air connectivity are ensuring seamless travel and trade in the region.

The chief minister cited the TCL region's strong cultural and historical value to express optimism about the industry's future. Through programs like WWII relic restoration and PPIF, the state hopes to preserve its legacy while drawing tourists from around the world.
