Union home minister Amit Shah stated on Thursday that “almost all” ideological objectives, including the abrogation of Article 370, have been achieved by the Centre, and the BJP-led government will persist on this trajectory in its third term.
Inaugurating the Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair 2025 organised by the RSS-affiliated Hindu Spiritual and Service Foundation in Ahmedabad, Shah highlighted that the Modi government has realised numerous ideological goals over the past decade, such as the abrogation of Article 370, the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and the abolition of triple talaq. He affirmed that this commitment would continue into the government's next tenure.
During his address at the Gujarat University grounds, Shah noted that there was a time when Hindus felt hesitant about expressing their identity in their own country. He asserted that, in the last ten years, this has dramatically changed, without specifying which Hindus felt hesitant about expressing their identities in India.
“Now, almost all tasks aligned with our ideology have been fulfilled,” he remarked, referencing significant accomplishments such as the abrogation of Article 370, the Ram Temple construction, the cessation of triple talaq, and the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Although the UCC has yet to be applied nationwide, it has been introduced in BJP-ruled Uttarakhand. Shah had previously informed the Rajya Sabha that the UCC would eventually be implemented across all states. He emphasised that while the current government has completed these significant tasks in a decade, previous administrations neglected them for 70 years.
Shah expressed pride that "170 countries have accepted yoga", reinforcing the significance of India's cultural contributions, but conveniently forgetting that yoga has long been popular in the West and in other parts of the world. He also remarked on the apparently profound shift in society: “There was a time when declaring 'I am Hindu' would lead to discomfort. What people felt inside had to remain unspoken. Today, almost all our ideological projects have been achieved openly.”
Shah further noted the "pride" felt during the G20 summit when world leaders paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial.
In tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary, Shah recognised him as a guiding figure in India's long struggle for independence, commending his efforts to rally support for the Azad Hind Fauj and lead the nation towards freedom. Again, Shah made no mention of Bose's avowedly secular ideology, or his utter — and well-documented — disdain for the politics of religion.
Given the historical context of the RSS, it is important to scrutinise the implications of such statements. The RSS has been associated with promoting a particular Hindu nationalist ideology, which has raised concerns about inclusivity and the potential for hate speech against minority communities.
