Fearing for her parents, a 20-year-old woman inserted surgical blades and stones into her private parts after she was raped by an auto-rickshaw driver earlier this week in Mumbai.

The auto driver was arrested on rape charges, but police say the investigation has revealed a more complicated story.

The case came to light when the woman, a resident of Nallasopara in Maharashtra's Palghar district, approached officials at Goregaon's Ram Mandir railway station alleging that she was raped by an auto driver even though she had earlier told the police that she had come to Mumbai by train that day.

However, during investigation, the woman revealed that she had gone to Arnala beach in Virar with the auto driver. Due to lack of identity card, they could not get a room in the guest house, so they decided to spend the night on the beach.

The woman alleged that the driver raped her there and then fled. Fearing punishment from her parents on returning home, the woman told the police that she bought a surgical blade and inserted it along with stones into her private parts. She then reached the railway station, but sought help from a doctor as she felt severe pain.

Doctors at the hospital removed the objects during an emergency procedure. Based on her complaint, a rape case was filed against the autorickshaw driver.

After she regained consciousness, the police personnel recorded the statement of the woman, but discrepancies were found in her statement. On interrogation, the entire matter came to light.

Initially, she claimed to be an orphan, but later it was revealed that she had parents. Her father told the police that she had filed a rape complaint against two persons in 2023. After an intense search, the police arrested auto driver Raj Ratan on Thursday night. Meanwhile, they continue to investigate the incident and the woman's contradictory statements.
