IIT Kanpur: The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is arguably the toughest examinations in the country and aspirants who attempt this recruitment test usually come from a sturdy academic background such as a very good college. But do you know which premier institute in India churns out the most IAS and IPS officers?
UPSC Factory
The college we are talking about is the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) which has earned the moniker UPSC factory for the sheer number of its alumnus who have aced the UPSC CSE and became IAS IPS or IFS officers.
According to media reports over 600 IIT Kanpur students have been selected in civil services with successful aspirants being either an alumni or having studied at the premier college for some period of time.
IIT Kanpur is often in the news each year when the UPSC CSE results are declared as it has almost become a certainty that at least a few students of the institute would be ranked among UPSC toppers.
Notably 2023 UPSC topper Aditya Srivastava who achieved All India Rank (AIR) 1 in the civil services exam is also an IIT Kanpur alumnus. Srivastava a native of Lucknow Uttar Pradesh has a M. Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur.

Located in Kanpur Uttar Pradesh IIT Kanpur was established in 1959 and was declared an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act.
The premier college has been consistently ranked among the countrys best academic and boasts 17 Padma Shri 4 Padma Bhushan 1 Padma Vibhushan and 33 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize recipients who have been an alumni or faculty members at IIT Kanpur.
According per data revealed by the Alumni Association of IIT Kanpur around 600 students who earned B.Tech and M.Tech degrees from IIT Kanpur cleared UPSC CSE while around 300 others cracked other civil service exams.
