Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor have long been one of the most beloved duos in the film industry. Their love story which blossomed over the years led to their marriage in 1980. Apart from being a dynamic duo on-screen where they starred together in numerous films their off-screen chemistry also made headlines. However there’s one amusing and somewhat embarrassing anecdote from their dating days that involves none other than Rishi’s legendary father Raj Kapoor.
It’s often said that Raj Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor had strikingly similar voices particularly when heard over the phone. One such incident before Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor tied the knot is recounted in Ritu Nanda’s Raj Kapoor: The One And Only Showman. During their dating days Rishi Kapoor had a penchant for partying and like many in the industry he would often drink. One evening the actor attended a party drank heavily and got quite drunk. Neetu Kapoor understandably upset by his behaviour was fuming by the time they reached home. In a fit of frustration she decided to call him and express her anger.
As the phone rang Neetu Kapoor was completely unaware that it wasn’t Rishi Kapoor who would pick up the call. To her surprise the voice on the other end was none other than Raj Kapoor. Neetu Kapoor thinking it was Rishi Kapoor immediately began shouting at him scolding him for his behaviour and drinking at the party. What happened next left her stunned. After she finished venting Raj Kapoor calmly informed her that it was actually his voice she had been yelling at not Rishi Kapoor’s. Neetu Kapoor embarrassed and mortified by her mistake was left speechless.
In an old conversation Neetu Kapoor once shared another memorable anecdote when a tipsy Raj Kapoor mistook her for his wife Krishna Raj Kapoor. Neetu Kapoor said “Once I was at a party. I knew that Papa was a big drinker but I asked him for a soft drink. He said to me ‘Here comes my Krishna!’ We all know how important his wife was in his life. For him to compare me with her even if he didn’t mean it was a huge compliment! I felt very good about it.”
