When is Deadline Day?Deadline day is on Monday, February 3, 2025, meaning that clubs do, in fact, have until early next month to finalise deals. Though it may seem strange that the final day of the January window isn't until the following month, the decision was made to keep the closing and opening of the window aligned with other top European leagues.
A statement made by the Premier League in May reads: "The winter window will open on Wednesday, 1 January 2025 and will close at 23:00 GMT on Monday, 3 February 2025.
"To ensure harmonisation with the major leagues in Europe, the closing dates were set following discussions with the EFL, DFL, Serie A, , and LFP, who will all close their Summer and Winter windows on 30 August and 3 February respectively."
When does the window close around Europe? As per the above statement, most top European leagues - including Italy’s Serie A, Germany’s Bundesliga and Spain’s La Liga, all close on Monday, February 3. However, certain windows will remain open past this date. Turkey’s deadline is the following week, and their clubs can still sign players up until February 11.
Some other windows have actually closed sooner, too, as Saudi Arabian clubs only had until January 30 to get any potential deals over the line. The Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship also had until Thursday, January 30, to complete their deals and had to do so by 11pm GMT.
Can clubs sign players or free agents after the deadline? If the deadline is missed, clubs can still sign players. However, a player cannot be registered by their new club until the window opens again. Furthermore, in the Premier League, if clubs submit a deal sheet before 11pm, they will have an extra two hours to complete and register a new signing.
If a player is a free agent and not currently contracted to another club, they can sign for any team at any time and are unaffected by the transfer deadline. Those who have contracts expiring in the summer can also agree to a Bosman free but would not officially move clubs until their deals are up in June.
