Death in Paradise returns to BBC One on Friday, January 31 at 9pm and it will see lead the team as Mervin Wilson. He had travelled to the Caribbean to meet his mother for the first time, which didn't go to plan.

While he sticks around, fans have been reminiscing over their favourite detectives who have come and gone on the show. Kris Marshall joined the show as clumsy London detective Humphrey Goodman in season three.

He was tasked with investigating the murder of his predecessor, Richard Poole (Ben Miller) and stayed on the island permanently after his wife left him. In season six, he resigned to move back to London to start a new life with Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton).

Kris has spoken openly in the past about why he left the series, revealing it had a lot to do with raising his young family. He told Lorraine Kelly on her show: "I realised I had to get my son to school.

"He was becoming a bit too Caribbean – he refused to wear shoes and would only drink coconut water and eat pineapple. He was very good on the beach but not so good with Maths and English, so I decided that it was time to get him to school."

He continued: "So the show had to go, really. But six months later I'm standing on a film set in a car park in Dagenham thinking at 4 o'clock in the morning thinking, 'Have I made the right decision?'"

He was able to reprise his role as Humphrey in the spin-off series, Beyond Paradise, which follows Humphrey and Martha in the fictional Devon town of Shipton Abbott.

Fans took to Reddit to discuss their favourite detective, with many voting for Humphrey as their number one.

Yorkshirelad4 said: "I liked Humphrey played by kris Marshall. What made me smile was when writing his notes he used scrap paper instead of a book."

Darkersaturn added: "Humphrey has always been my favourite, but that's because he's a lot like me in a lot of ways."

Tarantula22 agreed: "Humphrey. I know Richard has his fans but let’s face it. When DiP is mentioned, most people’s thoughts go to the Humphrey era."

Sk888888 expressed: "Humphrey will always be my #1 (the Parrot episode was the first one I ever saw) but I came to love Richard, still can't re-watch Season 3, episode 1."

Kris went on to star in Sanditon as Tom Parker and had guest roles in We Hunt Together and Promises before reprising his role for Beyond Paradise, which is now in its third season.
