After revealed social media remarks from her past made a major uproar during awards season, Oscar-nominated “Emilia Perez” actress Karla Sofia Gascon has apologized deeply via Netflix.
The actress apologized for the offensive remarks she posted on social media years ago. She is the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” Gascon said in a statement that Deadline was able to get, acknowledging the damage caused by her previous tweets. Being a member of a minority group, I am acutely aware of this suffering, and I sincerely apologize to anybody I have hurt. I’ve battled for a better world my whole life. Light, in my opinion, will always prevail over darkness.
According to Deadline, the scandal started when social media postings from roughly five years ago reappeared, including unpleasant and critical words about important events like George Floyd’s murder and divisive remarks against Islam and its adherents in Spain.
Long before her transition and public coming out as transgender in 2016, Gascon was performing in local television shows at the time the postings were posted.
Gascon’s apology, in spite of the criticism, comes as the actress has been making waves in Hollywood thanks to her Oscar-nominated, groundbreaking performance in “Emilia Perez.”
Her poignant performance in the movie won her a Golden Globe nomination, making her the first openly transgender actor to receive such a distinction.
The film itself has Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best International Film.
