A second stampede has been reported at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, just hours after the first tragic incident that claimed at least 30 lives and injured 60 others on Mauni Amavasya. The second stampede occurred in the Jhusi area, approximately 2 kilometers away from the site of the first stampede, around 5:55 am on January 29.

Eyewitnesses describe the scene as chaotic, with people breaking through barricades and pushing forward, resulting in crushing and suffocation. The police reportedly arrived at the scene four hours after the incident, and the bodies of those who died were only removed by 1:30 pm.

A video posted by a media house shows piles of clothes, footwear and bottles being cleared by tractors from Jhusi. It is said 7-8 tractors were used to clear the site.

According to an India Today report citing an official, the authorities did not publicly disclose the second stampede to avoid panic among the pilgrims. The death toll of 30, which has been shared as the casualty of the first stampede at Maha Kumbh, also includes those who lost their lives in the second stampede.

In response to the incidents, the Mela administration has made significant adjustments to the Kumbh Mela zone's preparations, including revoking all VVIP permits, restricting vehicle entry, and introducing a one-way traffic system. A PIL has also been filed in the Supreme Court, seeking directions to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims attending the festival.
