New Delhi: Ravi Bishnoi (3-28) and debutant Harshit Rana (3-33) each took three wickets to help India defeat England by 15 runs in the fourth T20I at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Friday. With this win India secured an unassailable 3-1 lead clinching the series ahead of the final match set to take place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
India bounced back after losing the third T20I in Rajkot having won the first two in Kolkata and Chennai.
Earlier Hardik Pandya (53) and Shivam Dube (53) played key roles in rescuing India from a difficult situation guiding them to a competitive 181/9 after Saqib Mahmood (3/35) impressed with the ball.
England’s aggressive start was led by Phil Salt and Ben Duckett who capitalized on the Power-play. Salt struck two early boundaries off Arshdeep Singh and Duckett quickly found his rhythm hitting well-placed shots for runs. Despite Arshdeep’s efforts to find movement Salt seized the opportunity.
Spin was introduced but England continued to dominate with Duckett taking on Varun Chakravarthy sweeping and reverse sweeping for quick runs bringing England to 62/0 by the end of the Power-play.
However India fought back as Bishnoi took the crucial wicket of Duckett (39 off 19 balls) and Axar Patel followed up by dismissing Salt (23 off 21 balls). The momentum shifted as England lost two wickets quickly.
England’s skipper Jos Buttler came to the crease but was dismissed cheaply by Bishnoi for 2. As England’s chase faltered Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone steadied the innings but the required run rate began to climb.
Mahmood then made history recording the first-ever triple-wicket maiden in men’s T20 internationals dismissing Sanju Samson (1) Tilak Varma (0) and Suryakumar Yadav (0) in consecutive balls. India’s total was reduced to 12/3 and the team was in trouble.
Pandya and Dube then rescued India with a stellar 88-run partnership leading India to 181/9.
England chasing 182 made a strong start but after quick wickets and a collapse they were left reeling. Rana who had come on as a concussion substitute for Dube made an immediate impact. His pace rattled England’s middle order removing Livingstone for 9 off 13 balls. With England at 99/4 the chase seemed in doubt.
Brook however fought on reaching fifty off 26 balls. But the fall of two quick wickets including Brook’s (51) and Carse’s dismissal (duck) left England at 133/6. Rana struck again getting Bethell caught for 6 and Bishnoi cleaned up Jofra Archer.
India secured the win by 15 runs with Arshdeep claiming the final wicket completing a dominant victory to seal the series at 3-1.
