On February 1, 2025, India celebrates its 49th Indian Coast Guard Day. This event honors the committed workers who defend the country’s coastline and uphold marine regulations. Since its founding, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), a crucial component of the Defense Ministry, has played a significant role in protecting the nation’s waterways.
To improve coastal security and fight smuggling, the Indian Coast Guard was formally founded on February 1, 1977. With a fleet of 158 ships and 78 planes, it has expanded from its initial seven surface ships to become a powerful force. On August 18, 1978, the Indian Parliament formally proclaimed February 1st to be Indian Coast Guard Day.
This day serves as a reminder of how important the Coast Guard is to maintaining national security and safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers. The ICG is in charge of protecting coastal areas, stopping smuggling, and supporting fishermen and seafarers. Along with union territories like Daman & Diu and Puducherry, it operates in nine coastal states: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal.
Since its establishment, the ICG has captured about 14,000 criminals and saved over 10,000 lives. The Indian Navy, Customs Department, and local law enforcement agencies collaborate with the fourth-largest Coast Guard in the world. The organization operates in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and has regional offices in Gandhinagar, Chennai, and Kolkata.
Grand festivities, such as parades, sporting events, cultural events, and volunteer work, are held to commemorate the day. These occasions demonstrate the ICG’s dedication to both national defense and marine security.
