A fresh comedy series is set to hit Amazon Prime this month and it already has fans 'crying' before its release.
Clean Slate, which sees Laverne Cox in a leading role, boasts an all-star cast and comes from the creative mind of legendary television producer Norman Lear.
Known for iconic sitcoms such as All In The Family and Good Times, Lear died in December 2023 at the age of 101. However, he was actively involved in the show's development as far back as 2022. Now, all episodes will be exclusively available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
Here's everything you need to know about the series including its release date, full cast, and more...
Clean Slate is slated for release on February 6, with all episodes dropping simultaneously for fans to binge-watch at their leisure. The first season comprises eight episodes.
According to the synopsis provided by Amazon, the show centres around Harry Slate, portrayed by comedian George Wallace, an outspoken Alabama car wash owner with old-school values. Harry's world is turned upside down when his estranged child returns home as a proud, trans woman named Desiree, played by Laverne Cox.
Desiree is on a mission to mend her strained relationship with her father, as they navigate their differences while living under the same roof. They hilariously experience all the coming-of-age milestones they missed the first time around, .
Meanwhile, Harry's right-hand man at the car wash, Mack (Jay Wilkison), develops feelings for Desiree. As Desiree and Mack's flirtation blossoms throughout the series, Desiree's return as her true self causes a stir in the church and strains her relationship with her closeted best friend and choir director, Louis (D.K. Uzoukwu). Simultaneously, a romantic spark ignites between Louis' mother, Ella (Telma Hopkins), and Harry.
What was initially thought to be a temporary homecoming could turn into a permanent stay for Desiree, as she discovers that her hometown might have room for her after all.
The series is led by Laverne Cox, who, after several minor television roles, gained recognition for her breakout role as Sophia Burset in the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black. She has since appeared in the film Promising Young Woman and a few episodes of The Blacklist.
George Wallace, best known for his stand-up comedy career, portrays Harry. Wallace has had several supporting roles in his acting career, including the Mayor in Batman Forever, and most recently appeared in Jerry Seinfeld's cereal movie Unfrosted.
The ensemble is further bolstered by the talents of Jay Wilkison, known for his appearances in several episodes of Younger, as well as veteran actress Telma Hopkins, renowned for her roles in Dead To Me and Family Matters.
Additionally, D.K. Uzoukwu joins the cast with credentials from the series Commune. Ahead of its debut on Amazon Prime, the series has already drummed up considerable excitement among viewers. The first-look trailer prompted a flurry of enthusiastic comments.
An excited fan exclaimed: "I'm screaming and crying. I'm so happy! Laverne as the lead in a series, omg!" Meanwhile, another admirer shared their adoration online: "George Wallace is an under used American treasure. Laverne Cox just keeps getting more beautiful. I love this for them both. Bravo!"
Clean Slate is streaming on Amazon Prime from February 6.
