The patch can slowly become thinner over the winter months. We can repair the patch by aerating it with our fork and sowing winter grass seed.
The winter grass seed is specifically designed to germinate in lower temperatures.
The soil will be very moist and sticky at this time of year, meaning the winter grass seed will settle into the soil nicely and germinate over the coming weeks and months.
If we want, we can quilt the seed with a 1cm layer of topsoil to prevent the seed from being eaten up by hungry birds.
The winter grass seed will germinate at around five degrees, but don't worry, the seed will sit dormant in much colder weather until the temperatures rise.
This means we can start to repair the lawn before early spring. We may have to do it again to thicken up the lawn but this starts the lawn care season off nicely.
I use a mini handheld spreader filled with winter grass seed to easily sow the grass seed onto any patches in the lawn.
I love a lush lawn, so the work to achieve it starts now.
