3 Idiots is one of the most beloved films in our film industry. From its brilliant comedy timing and stellar star cast to its unforgettable characters the film stands out as a masterpiece. It was ahead of its time skillfully blending humour and emotion making audiences laugh and cry in equal measure. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it’s a movie everyone has watched multiple times finding joy in its comedic moments. However there was one particular scene that upset and offended a person and this incident was revealed by director Rajkumar Hirani in a recent interview. Rajkumar Hirani appeared on Komal Nahatas podcast where he was asked about the humorous Khujli Roti scene from 3 Idiots. The director recalled that while the scene managed to make the audience laugh it also stirred an unexpected reaction from someone close to Aamir Khan. Rajkumar Hirani shared that after the films release a member of Aamir Khans team named Sachin approached him with his concerns. He recalled the incident saying “Aamir ke saath ek boy kaam karta hai Sachin. Jab film release hui toh team ne dekhi and then Sachin came to me. He told me Sir film toh achi lagi but ek cheez achi nahi lagi. Aapne hum gareebon ka mazak udaya hai.’” This moment made Rajkumar Hirani pause and reflect on how the film’s portrayal might be perceived. The ace filmmaker clarified that he never intended to mock poverty. He said “It struck me then. Main toh cinema ki baat kar raha tha. Ek waqt jab black and white cinema hua karta tha Waha ek ghar dikhate the with laachar maa kunwari bhen aur bimaar baap. But we didnt know how it could get such a reaction. So after that I realised that one should be a little careful. Released in 2009 3 Idiots was a coming-of-age comedy-drama starring Aamir Khan R. Madhavan Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor. The film was loosely adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone. It became a massive success winning three National Film Awards 11 nominations at the 55th Filmfare Awards and international accolades like the Japan Academy Award. Made on a budget of Rs 55 crores it earned Rs 460 crores at the box office becoming the highest-grossing Indian film at that time and even earning a spot in the Guinness World Records.
