New Delhi: Abhishek Sharma delivered an impressive performance in the fifth T20I against England at Wankhede Stadium scoring a remarkable century off just 37 balls. This marked his second T20I hundred. He reached fifty in a mere 17 balls contributing to Indias record powerplay total of 95. Sharma’s aggressive batting included 10 sixes leading to his final score of 135 runs off 54 balls which is the highest by an Indian in T20Is. His century is the second fastest by an Indian in T20Is following Rohit Sharmas 35-ball century against Sri Lanka and ranks as the fourth fastest overall behind Sikandar Raza (33) David Miller (35) and Rohit Sharma (35). Abhishek Sharma has made history by becoming the first player globally to achieve a T20I century against England in under 40 balls. Previously the record for the fastest T20I century against England was held by Aaron Finch who reached his hundred in 47 balls. Abhishek distinguished himself with his diverse shot selection. He excelled against both fast and spin bowlers confidently advancing towards Jofra Archer executing cuts and drives with accuracy and even hitting Jamie Overton for a six over his head to reach his fifty. His bold strategy enabled India to achieve their highest-ever T20I powerplay score of 95/1 as well as their top total against England reaching 247/9 which exceeded the previous record of 224/2 established in 2021. In reaction to the scoreboard pressure England struggled significantly. Phil Salt made an explosive start with a quick 55 runs off 23 balls but the rest of the batting lineup fell apart. Ben Duckett Jos Buttler Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone collectively scored only 18 runs leading to Englands total of 97 runs in just 10.3 overs. Abhishek who had already troubled England with his batting took two wickets for only three runs in his single over getting rid of Brydon Carse and Overton. Mohammed Shami (3 wickets for 25 runs) Shivam Dube (2 for 11) Varun Chakravarthy (2 for 25) and Ravi Bishnoi (1 for 9) contributed significantly to Indias commanding victory. The team achieved a 150-run win marking it as their second-largest margin in T20 internationals surpassed only by their 168-run victory over New Zealand earlier in 2023.
