Gary Neville still criticised Kai Havertz for his lack of confidence in front of goal during impressive 5-1 victory over Manchester City. The Gunners dominated the match at the Emirates, keeping up the pressure on Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table with five different players scoring.
Despite adding a late goal to the tally with a stunning left-footed strike into the far corner, Neville was not impressed with the German's earlier performance after he missed a clear opportunity to put 2-0 ahead. Havertz had the chance to double Arsenal's lead after they pounced on a Manchester City error, but he blasted wide from just inside the box with only Stefan Ortega and a City defender on the line to beat.
This led Neville to make a harsh four-word critique of the former Chelsea player's confidence on Sky Sports, as he said: "He didn't want it."
Neville added: "He didn't want it first time around (for Odegaard's goal) and didn't want it there either. Havertz is having a confidence crisis."
Earlier in the game, Manuel Akanji's mistake allowed both Havertz and Martin Odegaard to break through on goal. But instead of trying to score himself, Havertz passed to Odegaard, who netted within the first two minutes.
Despite Neville's criticism, Havertz's superb goal put the icing on the cake of Arsenal's 5-1 victory over Manchester City, and stopped any chance of a comeback from the visiting team.
While the German scored his third goal in nine matches, there's continued speculation that Mikel Arteta is scouring the market for a prolific forward to bolster Arsenal's title ambitions.
With their eye on Liverpool at the top, Arsenal have been linked with Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, but saw an offer rebuffed earlier in the window. When questioned on any potential deadline day deals, Arteta played down any hype by keeping a tight-lipped stance.
He said: "I don't know, my phone has been off with the transfer window, forbidden to call me, text me about any of that. My focus is that we have the best preparation we can have for Wednesday and that was the only thing I was interested in."
