Carlisle United are reportedly considering a bold move to bring Liverpool and England legend on board as their new head coach.

The 44-year-old confirmed last week that he has left his managerial role in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq, leaving him currently without a club.

According to , Gerrard's name has been floated internally for the Carlisle position, although it remains unclear whether he would be interested in such a move having been on £15million a year in Saudi Arabia.

Carlisle, currently languishing five points from safety after a challenging period under Williamson, dismissed their head coach on Monday following a devastating 5-1 home defeat to Swindon Town.

The Cumbrians are keen to make a quick appointment as they fight to maintain their EFL status, and Gerrard, with his previous experience at Rangers and Aston Villa, would certainly turn heads.

Carlisle's current sporting director, Robert Clarkson, worked at Rangers during Gerrard's tenure before departing the Scottish club in 2022.

Appointed by Carlisle's ambitious American owners three months ago, Clarkson is part of an initiative led by Castle Sport Group, who took over Carlisle in November 2023. The Piatak family from Jacksonville, Florida, runs the company.

After being relegated from League One last season, the club has continued to struggle this term under both Paul Simpson and his successor, Williamson.
