Amid mounting rumors that Virat Kohli would resume the leadership position, Rajesh Menon, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), kept silent over the team’s choice for skipper for the next Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
He made a suggestion that the club has a number of seasoned players that may be the team’s captain, leaving the position open.
Notably, RCB did not seek a clear captaincy choice during the last mega auction and decided not to retain their former captain, Faf du Plessis, which increased conjecture over the team’s leadership.
On the first day of the mega auction, RCB started slowly as major players like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer were sold to rival clubs. However, RCB staged a spectacular comeback on the second day, making a number of wise decisions to assemble a calm and well-balanced squad.
After the 2021 season, Kohli resigned as captain of the RCB, citing workload management. However, with many people anticipating for a return, Kohli’s prospects of assuming the extra RCB leadership role have improved after his recent retirement from T20 internationals.
It’s too early to discuss it. The blend includes a variety of experienced individuals. Therefore, we must assess and reach a decision. We’ll reach that decision soon,” Rajesh Menon said to Sports Today, India Today’s sister station.
Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman and South African cricket great AB de Villiers has previously expressed support for Kohli leading the RCB as captain in the 2025 Indian Premier League. During the 2016 season, when RCB advanced to the final, Kohli shown exceptional leadership and skill to lead the club ahead. He captained the franchise from 2013 until 2021.
“Friends, I believe that Virat Kohli is the only viable candidate to be the captain of the RCB. As his career draws to a close, he is more motivated than ever. We are used to seeing him perform innings that win games until he finds his rhythm and starts scoring runs. In January, de Villiers stated, “It’s like a swansong.”
