Crucial money-saving advice from has resurfaced after confirmation last week that water bills will rise.

Households in England and Wales will see an .

Mr Lewis, who founded Money Saving Expert, issued a warning to households with more bedrooms than people living there.

"Do you have more or the same number of bedrooms in your house than people?" the financial guru said.

"So three bedrooms, two people, you would say yes. Because water bills are based on the value of your house, the rateable value, so the bigger it is, the more you'll pay, whereas [water] meters depend on how much you use."

He added: "The less people, the less you use."

A water meter records the amount of water being used in your home.

In an old Martin Lewis Money Show Live broadcast which has now resurfaced, he added: "If you live in England or Wales and there are more bedrooms in your home than people, getting a free water meter could help you save £100s as you only pay for what you use instead of a fixed amount."

He also recommended using the Consumer Council for Water's free calculator to check whether you would be likely to save money.

The increase in water bills in England and Wales was confirmed by industry body Water UK.

It will see the average water and wastewater bill jump from £480 to £603 for the next year alone.
