In today's time, the automobile industry is changing rapidly. Due to rising prices of petrol and diesel and environmental concerns, the demand for electric and hybrid cars is increasing. However, many people are confused about the difference between these two. Let us know the main difference between hybrid and electric cars and which car may be better for you.

Hybrid Car

Hybrid cars use two different technologies. A petrol or diesel engine and an electric motor. These two engines together provide the combined power to run the car. Hybrid cars can be divided into two major categories.

Mild Hybrid

These are similar to conventional petrol/diesel cars, but a small electric motor is installed in them which helps in increasing mileage. Mild hybrid cars cannot run in completely electric mode.

Strong Hybrid

It is also called full hybrid. These cars can also run in EV mode, that is, at low speeds it runs only on battery and at high speeds it uses the engine. These cars can automatically switch between petrol and electric motor.

Electric Car

Electric vehicles (EV) are completely dependent on batteries and do not have any type of conventional engine. They are charged from charging stations or chargers installed at home. The battery of these cars can give a range of up to 200-500 km on a single charge. They are expanding rapidly in countries like America, Europe and China, but in India the charging infrastructure is still limited.

Which car is better?
  • For the environment: Electric cars are more eco-friendly as they do not produce any emissions.
  • Fuel Saving: Hybrid cars run on petrol/diesel but the mileage is better due to the EV mode feature.
  • Charging infrastructure: Electric cars require charging stations, which are not available everywhere. Hybrid cars are more convenient in this case.
