Indian textile heritage boasts of a rich history, vibrant culture and exquisite craftsmanship. Saree is part of India’s traditional clothing. There are myriad types of sarees, and how they are worn. One such special work from Maharashtra’s Paithani region is called Paithani. A woman from Vadodara has a century old classic Paithani saree with intricate gold thread work and traditional motifs. It is a royal heirloom piece that dates a century back.

This woman is a custodian of some of the most unique handicraft fashion pieces that showcase the tapestry of India’ craft. She was once a journalist who is now regarded as ‘Modern Maharani.’ This is Radhikaraje Gaekwad, Maharani of Baroda, Gujarat.

100-year-old nauvari paithani saree

Celebrating 25 years of Sabyasachi, Indian one of the ace fashion designer- Sabyasachi Mukherjee- hosted a grand event were Maharani of Baroda was invited. In the grand celevration of arti, craftsmanship and fashion, she chose to drape nin-yeards-of elegance that is century’s old. This black paithani saree belonged to her father-in-law’s eldest daughter Mrunalini Devi, the Maharani of Dhar. This was her mother-in-law’s saree.

Her style of draping is dated back to 17-the-century Maratha empire when women wore saree in warrior style. To complete her look, Gaekwad paired the saree with classic Marathi jewellery. The sat lada necklace (a layered design worn in counts ranging from three to even 1001 as mentioned in the Arthashastra), emerald bhikbali earrings (historically worn by Brahmin men or the Peshwas), and the Basra pearl jhumkis, and ivory and gold bangles, passed down from her grandmothers. These pieces add layers of personal heritage and significance to the ensemble.

In an interview with Mid-Day she revealed that everything she is wearing is atleast 80-90 years old except her juttis.

The Maharani lives in India grandest mansion – Laxmi Villas Palace. It has around 170 rooms and said to be costlier than Mukesh Ambani’s Antilia in Mumbai.
