The first film rejected by Abhishek which Aamir Khan seized was Ashutosh Gowarikers sports drama Lagaan. After Abhisheks denial Khan took on the role leading the film to blockbuster success. Reflecting on his decision Bachchan acknowledged that he didnt feel ready to take on such a grand project at that stage of his career. I was convinced I was not right for the part. I was way too raw and young to shoulder a film as epic as Lagaan. Of course I knew it was going to be huge. But I was just not ready to be part of it. I’m glad Aamir did Lagaan. Likewise Abhishek Bachchan was initially the top choice for Farhan Akhtars iconic film Dil Chahta Hai which went on to receive critical acclaim and achieve cult status with Aamir Khan Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna in lead roles. Moreover Bachchan turned down Rakeysh Omprakash Mehras Rang De Basanti reportedly due to confusion stemming from the directors narration. Bachchan said he couldnt understand the storyline shifting between two time zones. The actor blames the director for this confusion. After this the role was offered to Khan. He took it and the film turned out to be a huge hit. Though Aamir was already one of the known actors in the industry all these movies rejected by Bachchan played an essential role in shaping Khans future.
