Marcus Stoinis, the standout all-rounder for Australia, shocked everyone on Thursday before the 2025 Champions Trophy by abruptly announcing his retirement from ODIs. He played white-ball cricket regularly over the last several years and was a member of Australia’s 15-man squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. He has chosen to concentrate on the shortest format.
In his most recent appearance in this format, he bowled three overs for Australia against Pakistan, scoring eight runs while giving up eleven runs. He reflected on his ODI career after making this startling revelation, calling it an amazing adventure while playing for Australia. He estimated that throughout the huge event, he would be cheering for the squad from home.
“I’m thankful for every second I’ve spent in the green and gold because playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an amazing trip. I will always be grateful to have had the opportunity to represent my nation at the greatest level. Although it wasn’t an easy choice, I think the time has come for me to leave ODIs and devote myself entirely to the next phase of my career. Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I have a great connection, and I am very grateful for his support. According to a press release, Stoinis said, “I’ll be supporting the boys in Pakistan.”
In September 2015, he made his ODI debut against England, but it took him 16 months to play in his second match, against New Zealand, in January 2017. Although his efforts were in vain, he was awarded Player of the Match for his match-winning numbers of 3/49 in the 10 overs that he bowled and his undefeated knock of 146 runs.
During his 71 ODI appearances for Australia, he amassed 1495 runs at an average of 1495, including six half-centuries and one century. In addition, he had career-best figures of 3/16 and took 48 wickets. He was named Australia’s ODI cricketer of the year in 2018–19 and was a member of the victorious squad in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
When the squad is finalized after the Test series against Sri Lanka, the selection panel will simultaneously name his successor for the Champions Trophy.
