We all need hobbies, but sometimes, the things we like doing can be irritating to the people around us.
Whether you like watching films, going out for walks, or collecting , we've all got hobbies that keep us occupied. Whatever brings you joy, you should do as often as you can, but if you want to be a good and family member at the same time, you should be considerate if your hobbies are particularly noisy. Hobbies like playing an instrument are best constrained to certain times of day, for example.
One woman is finding out the hard way that her neighbour doesn't care about her own happiness as much as his own, however, as his hobby is so noisy that it's driving her crazy, and she even considers it "torture" to live next to him. Her neighbour doesn't play music or do loud DIY projects - instead, he collects wind chimes.
In a post on Reddit, the woman said her neighbour's collection of wind chimes are a huge problem when it's breezy outside, particularly at night. She has lost out on so much sleep as a result of the noisy chimes that she believes it's now starting to negatively impact her health.
She said: "For some time now, I've had to sleep on our living room couch because the sounds wake me at night. I've purchased ear plugs and still get woken up when sleeping in the bedroom. It's so bad that now it's affecting my health. I have sleep deprivation and anxiety. I hear bells at night, daytime, it's all the time. I can't take it anymore.
"I looked up our town ordnance for noise pollution and wind chimes are excluded. No one knows what a torture it is hearing bells all day. Especially at night when trying to sleep."
The woman believes her neighbour is aware the chimes are a disturbance but "doesn't care", because he has a large wind chime up specifically near their bedrooms. It recently fell down after a particularly windy night, and instead of keeping it away from their house, her neighbour put it right back up again.
She added: "I strongly believe he purchased the large wind chime and hung it directly near the bedrooms for the simple purpose of annoying the previous owner who lived in our home before and now we are the next victims. He just gives off those vibes.
"While it worked for the previous owner because he sold his home, we are not moving. I need to find a solution and don't know how to go about it without making an enemy with our neighbors. I can’t take it anymore. What would you do, if you were in my situation?"
Commenters on the post urged the woman to at least ask her neighbour if he would consider moving his wind chimes before jumping to conclusions, as it might be that he doesn't know how noisy they are to other people.
One person said: "Ask him to move them. And if he refuses, tell him you are then going to party in your backyard as you can’t sleep anyway." Another added: "Talk to neighbor and ask them if they can put them in a different area that you have very sensitive hearing. Tell neighbor that you're not trying to be intrusive, and you'd like to be on better terms. Silent terms."
