The recently released will of the late Ratan Tata has revealed something. The entrepreneur has given Mohini Mohan Dutta, a little-known individual, a third of his fortune, or more than Rs 500 crore. The mystery surrounding this gift is increased by the fact that Tata and Dutta’s connection is still unknown. The Tata family is said to have been shocked when Dutta’s name was included in the will.
Mohini Mohan Dutta is who?
Jamshedpur native Mohini Mohan Dutta has spent decades working in the tourism industry. Like a movie premise, his inheritance of more over Rs 500 crore from Ratan Tata’s will has sparked interest. The Stallion travel agency, which was owned by Dutta’s family, amalgamated with Taj Services, a division of the Taj Group of Hotels, in 2013. Tata Industries controlled 20% of Stallion, while the Dutta family owned 80%. Mohini Dutta is also the director of TC Travel Service, a Thomas Cook-affiliated business.
According to sources, the Tata family was fully aware that Dutta was a former coworker of Ratan Tata. Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, Ratan Tata’s half-sisters, are included on his death certificate. However, legal expert Darius Khambata would not comment on Dutta’s involvement in Tata’s life.
Beyond commerce, the Dutta family had a close relationship with the Tatas. One of Dutta’s two daughters, who had previously worked at Taj Hotels, spent nine years at Tata Trusts till 2024.
An Association That Lasts Six Decades
At Ratan Tata’s funeral in October 2024, Mohini Mohan Dutta made news by reflecting on their 60-year romance. According to Dutta, “Ratan Tata was 24 years old at the time of their first meeting at the Dealers Hotel in Jamshedpur.” He supported and encouraged me.
Ratan Tata’s Obituary: Legal Examination of Wealth Distribution
In December 2024, Mohini Mohan Dutta was invited to an event at NCPA in Mumbai to celebrate the anniversary of Ratan Tata’s birth.
Renowned for his generosity, Ratan Tata donated a significant amount of his fortune to worthy organizations. While a significant portion of his assets have been set aside for the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and Ratan Tata Endowment Trust, his will also contains provisions for his half-sisters.
Luxury vehicles like Ferraris and Maseratis, pricey artworks, startup stock, and other investments are all part of Tata’s fortune. By 2023, his personal investment vehicle, RNT Associates, had assets valued at Rs 186 crore, and its market value has probably increased considerably since then.
A legal assessment of Tata’s asset allocation is now underway. According to legal experts, Tata’s death certificate and High Court certification must be submitted as part of the probate procedure. Before the final distribution is finished, the whole procedure may take up to six months.
