There is no doubt about Tanuja being one of the top actresses of Indian cinema in the 60s and 70s. She has played every role with the highest level of commitment authenticity and excitement. During her time the actress kept on entertaining fans with her choices of films and brilliant performances. Tanuja Mukherjee who became the first choice for filmmakers at one time was once slapped by a director on the set? Yes you read that right! In an interview with Lehren Retro the veteran star once revealed that director Kidar Sharma slapped her for repeatedly laughing when she was supposed to cry during a scene in Hamari Yaad Ayegi. Tanuja left the set crying and complained to mother Shobna who after listening to the entire episode gave another slap to Tanuja. She took her back to the set and told the director that she is crying and he can resume the shoot. Although Humari Yaad Aayegi failed to achieve success at the box office but earned Tanuja widespread recognition. She established herself in Hindi and Bengali films and starred in several successful movies. One of her most successful film was Haathi Mere Saathi alongside Rajesh Khanna. It became one of the highest-grossing films of 1971 and her pairing with Kaka was widely adored by the audience. Her other superhits include Agni Jeene Ki Raah Do Chor Ek Jaan Hain Hum and Pyaar Ki Kahani. On the personal front Tanuja met filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee while shooting for her film Ek Baar Muskura Do (1972). They had soon fallen in love and tied the knot in the year 1973. The couple has two daughters actresses Kajol and Tanisha. After few years of marriage the couple decided to part ways as they had a lot of tiffs and clashes. In an interview with TOI the actress stated they had made sure to fulfill their role as parents. She had said We fell in love and tied the knot. What happened later is not important except that we are not together anymore. We agreed to disagree. The only thing I am grateful for is my two daughters Kajol and Tanishaa. Shomu and I never argued in front of them and when they they went to boarding school we visited them as parents each month. Shomu Mukherjee died on 10 April 2008 from heart attack at the age of 64.
