A man and his parents were found guilty of killing his wife over dowry, and the Additional District and Sessions Judge of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, condemned them to death. The three accused were also fined Rs 1.80 lakh by the court. The decision was handed down by Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar, who oversaw the fast-track court.
On May 1, 2024, the victim, Farah, was allegedly murdered at their house by her husband, Makshad Ali, his mother, Masitan ‘Hamshreen,’ and father, Sabir Ali. The court stressed in its ruling that women’s security and safety would be at risk if a severe penalty were not applied.
The court said that the death penalty was imposed in order to serve as a deterrent and to set an example for others. On May 1, 2024, the deceased’s spouse and her in-laws used an axe to murder her. The Hindustan Times reported attorney Digamber Singh as adding, “Police had found a blood-stained axe in the house.”
“The accused did not respond when the court asked them if they would have killed their daughter in the same way,” he said.
