If you've noticed that the lush green leaves of your peace lily are starting to turn brown at the tips - yet the rest of the plant looks healthy - it could be down to a simple and common error.
Leslie, a expert with a knack for plant care at Growing Somewhere, reveals that the browning usually signifies damage from chlorine, a chemical prevalent in tap water.
In an instructional video, Leslie explained: "Do you have a peace lily or spider plant whose leaves keep turning brown on the tips but otherwise seems pretty healthy? Mine used to get pretty bad with several inches of brown dry parts at the end of the leaves, and I didn't really know why until recently."

are exceptionally sensitive to chlorine, which can actually scorch the leaf tips. To resolve this issue, Leslie suggests an easy trick: "All I do is simply sit my water out. Your city water likely has chlorine in it, and sitting my water out for about 24 to 48 hours will allow the chlorine to evaporate.
"It's the chlorine that is causing the tips of the leaves to go brown so if you just set your water out and let it evaporate then you will no longer have that problem."
Since city water supplies typically contain small amounts of chlorine, setting the water aside before using it on plants is a necessary step to filter out the chemicals. Simply leave your houseplant water for a day or two and the chlorine will naturally evaporate.
Alternatively, if you can't wait that long, rainwater is also suitable for watering peace lilies, reports . However, distilled water isn't recommended as it lacks many beneficial minerals needed by your houseplants.
After a few weeks, your peace lily should return to its lush, green state. If brown tips persist, it could be due to underwatering. Peace lilies should be watered once a week when the top half of the soil in the pot is dry, but before the leaves start to droop.
It's crucial that the plant is in well-draining soil, as waterlogged peace lilies can develop rotting roots and become susceptible to diseases. Peace lilies also flourish in humid conditions, so consider placing them in your bathroom or kitchen if they continue to have brown tips.
If your peace lily still has browning leaves, it may be due to other common mistakes made by houseplant owners during winter.
