In the Bollywood industry Shah Rukh Khan is currently known as the King of Romance. However did you know that there was an actor before SRK who held the same title? The tag belonged to an actor with whom not just one two or three actresses but a total of 20 started their careers. Yes you read that right! The actor we are talking about belonged to Bollywood royalty and his son is also a superstar in the industry. However he is no longer with us. Yes! We are talking about Rishi Kapoor.
Rishi was among those actors who started their journey not as an adult star but as a child artist. At a very young age Kapoor made a name for himself. He made his debut in his father Raj Kapoor’s movie Mera Naam Joker for which he bagged the National Film Award for Best Child Artist. Later in 1973 he debuted as an adult actor alongside Dimple Kapadia in the film Bobby. He was 21 at that time.
Kapoor played the romantic lead in 92 movies from 1973 to 2000. Rafoo Chakkar Kabhi Kabhie Laila Majnu Amar Akbar Anthony Hum Kisise Kum Nahin Sargam Naseeb Kaatilon Ke Kaatil Prem Rog Coolie Nagina Chandni Henna Deewana Bol Radha Bol and Damini are just a few of the high-grossing Indian films he starred in from the mid-1970s to the 1990s.
With this Rishi not only made a name for himself in the industry but also emerged as Bollywood’s Romance King. His stardom was at its peak which is why 20 actresses made their debuts alongside him. The list includes Dimple Kapadia Jaya Prada Zeba Bakhtiar Shoma Anand Bhavana Bhatt Radhika and Ranjeeta Kaur.
But once at the peak of his career he had decided that he would say goodbye to acting. He revealed this on Anupam Khers show. He said There came a time when I felt that I was not getting acting roles. I was just wearing colorful sweaters singing songs with a guitar. No good roles were coming to me.
Expressing his thoughts Rishi Kapoor said At that time my weight was also increasing. Then actors like Shah Rukh Aamir and Salman Khan entered the industry. People had tolerated me for 25 years. I felt that either I would shut down the film producers office or the audience would turn against me.
Rishi passed away at the age of 67 after battling leukemia. Now his son Ranbir Kapoor is one of the most prominent actors in the industry and has featured in several hit films.
