Speaking at the awards ceremony, Marks confirmed that the writers have completed work on all 10 episodes, including the finale, and that production planning is now underway.

"We’re coming out of the writers' room now," Marks told Deadline on February 7, as quoted in a report by TV Insider.

"We’re also done with the 10 episodes, and we have our finale now. That’s allowing us to start figuring out how we’re going to shoot this. But we’re very excited about the plan."

What to Expect in Season 2

Marks hinted that Shōgun Season 2 would feature major surprises right from the opening episode.

"I think the thing to take away, more than anything, is how, I hope, people are going to be surprised with some of the big ideas as soon as the first episode of Part 2," he said.

While he did not reveal specific plot details, Marks suggested that the story would continue to expand in unexpected ways, particularly for lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who portrays Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

Sanada, who won the Best Actor in a Drama Series award at the Critics Choice Awards, expressed his hopes for his character’s progression in the next chapter.

"In Season 1, [Toranaga] didn’t become a shōgun yet," Sanada noted. "So, I’d like to see him become the leader of Japan. That is my hope."

Award-Winning Success Paves Way for New Seasons

Shōgun dominated the Critics Choice Awards, securing four major wins, including:

  • Best Drama Series
  • Best Actor in a Drama Series – Hiroyuki Sanada
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – Moeka Hoshi
  • Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – Tadanobu Asano
These victories add to the show’s historic Emmy success, where it set the record for most Emmy wins for a single season of a drama series, collecting 18 awards across the Primetime Emmy Awards and Creative Arts Emmy Awards in September 2024.

With an impressive 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Shōgun has earned widespread critical acclaim.

TV Insider’s Matt Roush, who named it the best TV show of 2024, praised the series, stating, "I never wanted to leave this world and its rewarding storytelling. Please, FX, never stop aiming this high."

FX Expands ‘Shōgun’ Into a Multi-Season Series

Given its critical and commercial success, FX made the decision to extend the series beyond its initial miniseries format.

In May 2024, the network officially placed Shōgun Season 2 and Season 3 into development, marking a significant expansion of the historical epic.
