Amazon Prime Video has snagged a top-notch thriller that left fans completely stunned.
Ex Machina, hitting UK screens back in 2015, scooped an Oscar for its stunning visual effects while also scoring a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. With thrilled cinema-goers giving it a strong Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 86%, the movie's pedigree is undeniable.
The film was steered by British talent Alex Garland, recognised not only for scripting last year's blockbuster Civil War but also lauded for his penmanship on Annihilation and Never Let Me Go.
Sticking to Garland's signature approach, Ex Machina tackles deep social concerns. It spins the tale of Caleb, a computer programmer invited to his boss's secluded pad for a week.
There, he encounters Ava, a robot whose human-like awareness leads to a nail-biting and acclaimed conclusion, reports .
Touching on more than just artificial intelligent, this flick probes into the morality of crafting synthetic life.
Leading the cast is Domhnall Gleeson as the curious Caleb, with Oscar Isaac playing the enigmatic CEO and Alicia Vikander portraying the robotic Ava.
Upon release, the movie was considered an instant classic by fans, with one swept-up IMDB reviewer exclaiming: "One of the best films ever made.."
The moviegoer was left utterly astounded by the flick, remarking: "Just saw the film and [I] am still gob-smacked, so this review may not be as clear as some of my earlier ones.
"Wow. As far as AI goes, this is the film that Spielberg wishes he would have made. It covers the same weighty questions but in a way that grabs the viewer by the throat and doesn't let go until the very end"
Another cinema enthusiast shared similar sentiments, writing: "Ex Machina is easily one of the greatest movies to ever tackle the ideas of artificial intelligence. Everything about the movie is put together in an elegant and intelligent way, the movie tackles the ideas in a mature way.
"There are no elaborate human vs machine fight scenes or military overlord presence, instead Machina focuses on the ethical questions that come from 'creating life'."
Meanwhile, another fan praised Alex Garland's first foray into directing, stating: "Nail-bitingly tense, terse and most importantly thought provoking, well renowned British screenwriter and author turned director Alex Garland's incredibly competent feature debut is one of modern cinemas most memorable and original Sci-Fi's, a film that you sense will be oft discussed in years to come thanks to its wealth of questions asked and a heralding in of the era of young actress Alicia Vikander."
One film enthusiast posted a review in 2022, expressing their astonishment at having overlooked the thriller for so long. "It's one of the best films I've seen in the last ten years.
"I can't believe I've been missing out all this time. If you haven't seen it, watch it. It's an all time classic," they said.
Ex Machina is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
