Aditya Thackeray, a Shiv Sena UBT MLA, has voiced opposition to several civic initiatives in Mumbai, particularly the proposed 17-floor car park near Mumbadevi. He raised concerns about security and local disruptions, including the impact on the temple and its surroundings. He met with Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani to request a halt to new road projects, an audit of ongoing work, and a reduction in unnecessary concretisation across the city.

The BMC’s Rs 122.61 crore project to construct a Multi-level Robotic Parking Tower (MRPT) near Mumbadevi began in April 2024, aimed at addressing local parking issues. However, work has been paused due to local opposition and a stay order. Thackeray has emphasized the need to protect both the temple and local residents from any negative effects of the project. Additionally, he has criticised BMC’s proposal for a user fee for garbage collection from all households and the introduction of property taxes for commercial units in slum areas.

Thackeray also requested municipal commissioner to halt all new road works and conduct thorough audit. Recently several residents group have raised their objections of unnecessary concretisation in their respective areas. Thackeray has asked BMC administration to reduce the proposed concretisation that is unnecessary.

As per the BMC officials, approximately 1333 km of 2025 km of roads had been concreted so far. The BMC is investing Rs. 12,000 crores to concretise nearly 800 kilometers of roads across Mumbai. In Phase 1, the BMC has undertaken the concretisation of 324 km of roads to be completed by May 31 2025. Currently, work is underway on 213 roads, while 298 roads are yet to be concretised. In Phase 2, which covers 1,420 roads, 433 are under construction, with many still pending. Despite the progress, the civic body has been receiving complaints about cracks developing on newly concretised roads, raising concerns about the quality of the work being carried out.
