Holidaymakers heading to the popular Canary Islands may be in for a surprise as Spain's State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has issued an alert for some unseasonal weather patterns this week.

Cold snaps, frost, and even a bit of Sahara dust are set to roll into the islands, prompting warnings for both residents and tourists to brace themselves.

A report from suggests that, initially, the weather across the islands will remain calm with only minor cloud coverage expected on Tuesday.

However, as the day goes on areas are likely to see "light haze" and fleeting frost on Tenerife's highest points. Nighttime is when the chill is expected to become more biting, as Aemet warns people to prepare for "intense cold" during the later hours and early morning.

Harsh winds are not expected, however, those with respiratory conditions should tread carefully outdoors since dust from the Sahara could be blown in from the East and aggravate their health.

Aemet's guidance extends to users of the mountain roads in Tenerife, advising them to proceed with "extreme caution" especially during the frost-prone night and dawn timeframes.

While Lanzarote and Fuerteventura can look forward to the more pleasant weather with occasional clouds, moderate temperatures, and gentle gusts, Gran Canaria expects similar conditions but with a "more evident haze" at higher altitudes.

Reports suggest that Tenerife could see a drop in temperatures on its peaks, potentially resulting in frost on Tuesday night. The mercury is expected to hover between 15 and 21 degrees Celsius.

La Gomera and La Palma are likely to experience the most cloud cover throughout the day, with a chance of rain for both islands - though these are predicted to be "light, scattered and occasional showers". Over in El Hierro, cloud cover is set to increase as the day progresses, with stable temperatures and light winds towards the end of the day.

This island is bracing for the coldest temperatures, anticipated to be between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius.
