Since first hit our screens 19 years ago, the show has seen a whole host of famous faces break into the of acting.
Having debuted back in 2006, the show recently launched its 15th series with several new additions to the cast. Among those joining the show for season 15 is after former head Steve Savage (Jason Manford) left having been involved in covering up the murder of a pupil at the school.
As Waterloo Road returns for another series, let’s take a look at what some of the cast of series one are up to now…

Jason Merrellswas the first ever head teacher on Waterloo Road thanks to his role as Jack Rimmer. During his time on the show, Jason’s character had to deal with unruly pupils, romantic liaisons as well as financial mismanagement after paying parents of a student to place them at the school.
His character eventually resigned and moved to Dubai, though briefly returned in series three - though fans will be pleased to know Jason has secured a guest spot on the newest series. “It’s a different building, but the same ethos, drama, humour & integrity are still in place, it felt like coming home,” he said.
Away from Waterloo Road, Jason played Declan Macey in for four years. He also appeared as DC Stead in series three of .
Jason married his first wife Judith Hurley in 1991 but the pair divorced in 1999. He then wed Zerlina Hughes in 2002, but their marriage ended in 2010.
Now recognised as a icon, Denise Welch was a successful actress thanks to her roles on and, of course, Waterloo Road.
Denise Welch, the star who captured our hearts as the Head of French, Steph Haydock, in Waterloo Road from series one to six, bid farewell to the show in 2011. After her departure, she turned heads with her role as Trish Minniver in Hollyoaks from 2021 to 2022 and even nabbed the Celebrity title in 2012.
She split from husband Tim Healy, who is dad to their two sons, including The 1975's Matt Healy and found love again with Lincoln Townley in the same year, going on to tie the knot in 2013. Now, the former Coronation Street star is celebrating a personal victory an impressive 11 years of sobriety.
She took to this year to share her journey, discussing how kicking her "disastrous" booze habit has profoundly changed both her and Lincoln's lives for the better.
Social media users may recognise from TikTok - where he posts light-hearted videos with his family - but back in the day he had a starring role on Waterloo Road where he played Donte Charles from series one to 11. Like Jason, Adam appears on the latest series of the show.
As well as his recurring his role on the show, the 36-year-old has become known for his bubbly personality after appearing on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2016. He also took part on in 2023 where he made it all the way to week seven.
Chelsee HealeyChelsee Healey left fans nostalgic for her portrayal of spirited pupil Janeece Bryant from the early days of Waterloo Road up to its fourth series. The character made her unexpected return down the line, this time behind the school secretary desk, joining the ranks among the teaching staff.
Chelsee hasn't stopped shining since; in 2016, she scored a coveted spot on Hollyoaks, playing the vibrant Goldie McQueen. Her presence on the show continues as Goldie remains integral to one of TV's most legendary soap families.
Off-screen, Chelsee's personal life flourished too; she became a mum to her daughter Coco in 2017 and recently, in 2023, welcomed another little girl into the , adorably named Cookie. Earlier this year she was a contestant on , though she became the first celebrity to be eliminated from the series.
“I feel, personally, there’s been a lot going on with me that I’ve been struggling with, so I couldn’t completely focus,” she said. “I’m just really grateful, I’ve had the best time.”
Jill Halfpenny etched herself into Waterloo Road lore as Izzie Redpath, the passionate Head of Drama, whose time on the series came to a tragic and shocking end when her character met her demise at the close of season two.
Post her exit from the show in 2007, the actress bagged roles in several series such as Mount Pleasant, Wild At Heart, BBC's Babylon and most recently, Channel 5's The Cuckoo.
Jill tied the knot with fellow actor Craig Conway in 2007 and they were blessed with a son, Harvey.
However, their marriage ended in divorce in 2010. Jill faced a personal tragedy in 2017 when her partner Matt Janes passed away unexpectedly due to a heart attack.
Another Waterloo Road legend comes in the form of Angela Griffin, who played Kim Campbell for the first five series before returning again in series 11. Throughout her time on the show, her character progressed from art teacher all the way to headteacher.
As well as appearing in the Your or Mine? franchise, viewers may recognise Angela, 48, for roles in the likes of Lewis, The Dumping Ground and BBC’s Ordinary Lies. She has also presented on BBC Radio 2 over the years, and hosts Radio 2 Unwinds with Angela Griffin to help listeners embrace wellbeing and positivity.
