From Ratan Tata to Manmohan Singh last year India bid farewell to several eminent dignitaries who played an important role in shaping the nations journey across various spheres. Industrialist-philanthropist Ratan Tata Ratan Tata passed away on October 9 at the age of 86. He was the Chairman of Ratan Tata Trust and Dorabji Tata Trust two of the largest private-sector-promoted philanthropic trusts in India. He was honoured with the countrys second-highest civilian award the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. Born in 1839 Jamsetji Tata was an Indian pioneer industrialist and the founder of the Tata Group one of India’s largest and oldest conglomerates. Known as the “Father of Indian Industry” he played a crucial role in the development of various sectors in India including steel power and hospitality. Jamsetji enrolled at Elphinstone College from where he passed in 1858 as a green scholar the equivalent of todays graduate. Dorab Tata Sir Dorab Tata the elder son of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was born on August 27 1859 when his father the founder of the Tata Group was 20 years old. Dorabji as he was known attended the Proprietory High School in Bombay and at the age of 16 was sent to a private tutor in Kent in England. At 18 he attended Gonville and Caius College at Cambridge. Sir Dorab returned to Bombay in 1879 and joined St Xavier’s College from where he obtained a bachelors degree in arts in 1882. Instead of including his son in his expanding business Jamsetji encouraged him to broaden his experience with a stint at journalism and later gave him independent charge of setting up a textile project in Pondicherry. Soon after Sir Dorab was sent to look after the company’s flagship Empress Mills in Nagpur India reported the official website of Tata group. At the age of 38 he married the beautiful Meherbai Bhabha the daughter of HJ Bhabha inspector general of education of the erstwhile Mysore state. Ratanji Tata the second son of Jamsetji Tata Ratan Tata was the second son of Jamsetji Tata the founder of the House of Tata. Born on January 20 1871 he was 12 years younger then his brother Sir Dorab Tata. Ratanji as he was generally known was educated at St Xaviers College in Bombay. Naval Tata As per the official website of the Tata group Naval who lost his father as a kid was studying at an orphanage when he was adopted at age 13 by Lady Ratan Tata the wife of Sir Ratan Tata the second of Jamsetji Tatas two sons (Lady Tata was apparently bowled over when Naval spiffed up in a sailors suit saluted her at their first meeting). He graduated from Bombay University and did an accounting course in England before joining the Tata Group in 1930. Three years later he was made secretary of its aviation department. He was appointed the managing director of the groups textile companies in 1939 and became a director of Tata Sons the core enterprise of the conglomerate in 1941. Ratan Tata Born to Naval and Soonoo Tata into the Parsi Zoroastrian family on December 28 1937 Ratan Tata and his younger brother Jimmy were brought up by their grandmother Navajbai R Tata in a baroque manor called Tata Palace in downtown Mumbai. Noel Tata  Noel the half-brother of the late Ratan Tata is a graduate from Sussex University (UK). Noel completed the International Executive Programme (IEP) from INSEAD.
