Renowned vocalist Prabhakar Karekar passes away at 80

Popular Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Prabhakar Karekar breathed his last on Wednesday, February 12. The renowned vocalist was 80. Prabhakar Karekar is survived by his three sons.



According to PTI, Prabhakar Karekar passed away in Mumbai following a brief illness. In a statement published by his family, Prabhakar Karekar breathed his last at his residence in Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Wednesday night.

Prabhakar Karekar was born in Goa and was a graded artist on the All India Radio (AIR) and in Doordarshan. Well known for his renditions such as Bolava Vithal Pahava Vithal" and "Vakratund Mahakay", Prabhakar Karekar was hailed as a magnificent vocalist and a talented teacher.


Trained under the legends Pandit Suresh Haldankar, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, and Pandit CR Vyas, Prabhakar Karekar has received several honours including the Tansen Samman, Sangeet Natak Akademi award , and Gomant Vibhushan award. Apart from Hindustani classical music, Pandit Prabhakar Karekar has also tried his hand at fusion music in collaboration with Ornette Coleman and Sultan Khan.

Meanwhile, Prabhakar Karekar is the founder and Chairman of the Swarprabha Trust. He has mentored numerous talented and accomplished young musicians. With several recordings to his name, he has also performed, delivered lectures, conducted workshops, and participated in conferences across various countries.

Several of Prabhakar Karekar's notable musical works include Bolava Vithal Pahava Vithal, Trith Vithal Kshetra Vithal Vithal Geete, Mayajaval Naase Ya Naame, and Kshan Ek Mana. His devotional repertoire also features Vakratund Mahakaya, Aselshwaranchachi Jo, and Vedaneche Val Hechi Maze Bal. Additionally, he has contributed to Vighnahar Tu Ozaricha, Siddhi Vinayaka Siddheshwari, Vimal Adhar Nikati Moh Ha Papi, and Karita Vichar Sapadle Varma. Many of his works highlight his deep connection to Marathi bhakti geet and abhangas, making him a revered figure in devotional and classical music.
