According to PhilStarher son Amado Fores revealed the news on Instagram on Tuesday, sharing the family’s deep sorrow and asking for privacy and prayers during this challenging time.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my Mom, Margarita A. Fores,” he posted. “Our family is mourning this unexpected loss, and we kindly ask for your prayers during this time. We will be able to share more in due time.”
Fores was in Hong Kong on a layover, planning to return to Manila, the Philippines, after celebrating a birthday in Morocco for luxury retailer Jappy Gonzalez with friends. Concern grew when she missed a luncheon and was unresponsive to calls, leading to the discovery of her death after her hotel room was forcibly opened.
The chef would have celebrated her 66th birthday in March. According to The Standardher cause of death is under investigation.
Fores developed her love for Italian cuisine while living in New York and trained under three chefs in Italy in 1986, mastering traditional Italian cooking techniques.
She began her career as a caterer and in 1997 opened Cibo, a popular Italian chain known for its affordable comfort food, now with over 20 locations in the Philippines. Her success led to the opening of other dining venues, including Lusso, Grace Park, and Loggia. Grace Park was ranked 12th on Opinionated About Dining’s list of Top Casual Restaurants in Asia for 2024.
Beyond her culinary success, Fores was a two-time cancer survivor, having beaten thyroid cancer in 2006.
She was also a member of the Araneta clan, a family with numerous members involved in Philippine politics and business, including First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, the wife of current President Bongbong Marcos.
