A new historical theme park could make County Durham one of the "great UK visitor destinations".
'Kynren - The Storied Lands' promises to be a "spectacular" daytime attraction, offering visitors a journey through history, myth, and legend with live-action performances, when it opens in 2026.
The first phase will feature five "monumental" shows and immersive experiences amidst landscaped historical settings, with more attractions planned for future development. Guests will be whisked back to Neolithic Britain upon entering the park, progressing to a Viking show filled with clashing warriors and interactive Norse life spectacles.
'The Legend of the Wear' will showcase water stunts on a giant lake, retelling the Lambton Worm myth, while 'The Lost Feather' will highlight the beauty and vulnerability of global bird species on a stage resembling a bird's nest.
The experience continues through the gaslit streets of Victorian England, culminating in 'Fina', the grand finale. Here, medieval knights joust on horseback, and a valiant female warrior demonstrates her bravery and skills in a thrilling display of horsemanship and daring stunts.
Kynren, the historical extravaganza, . Anna Warnecke, CEO at Kynren, hailed the park as a potential game changer for the UK's visitor experience market.
"For the past decade, we have poured passion and expertise into delivering Kynren – An Epic Tale of England, and now we are bringing that same level of scale, innovation, and magic into this new daytime attraction," she said. "You won't just witness history – you'll live it, feel it, and be moved by it."
Durham County councillor Amanda Hopgood expressed her support for the project, believing it will bolster County Durham's reputation as a top UK destination. She said: "This extravaganza will sit at the heart of the County's offering".
With millions being invested and hundreds of jobs expected to be created, Jonathan Ruffer, founder of Kynren operator 11Arches, reflected on the project's beginnings.
He said: "When the first quivering shovel went into the land at Flatts Farm, ten years ago, onlookers were united that the grand plan for a night show, which might or might not be called, Kynren, was completely bonkers.
"A decade on, Kynren is one of the wonders of the North East. As we prepare for the opening of Kynren – The Storied Lands, there is excitement a-plenty.
"What a difference those ten years have made! Kynren's success has not only made the day park possible, but it has provided a springboard for its opening next year."
